âI just canât believe Trista isnât going to be there,â I tell Mark. âI really thought weâd be over this by now.â
Mark is fixing the collar on his dress shirt in the bathroom mirror. When he finishes, he moves behind me, helping me with the zipper on my navy dress.
âWe knew this was going to change things, Emery,â he says, kissing my neck. âBut youâre right, itâs bullshit that she is still angry over the broken nose.â
I reach for my lipstick, leaning away from Mark and running a pale pink shade over my lips. âI got a text from Caroline. She said she wanted to talk this morning.â I roll my eyes. âMy friends are so clueless. They have no idea what my life is like.â
âWhat did you tell her?â
âI said Iâd talk to her on the ferry. She and Pete will be on the eleven a.m. too.â
âItâs gonna be an interesting afternoon.â Mark chuckles, shaking his head. âTom and Rose will be on the boat too.â
âYou think Holden will hang in there?â I ask.
âItâs gonna be a lot,â Mark says. âEspecially with the Times photographer coming.â
I twist my lips, suppressing my pride. The Seattle Times is going to cover our family today, when the judge bangs his gravel, announcing us an official family when we walk out of the courthouse, the four of us promised to one another forever. Itâs the day I dreamed about all those months ago when we first brought Holden home. Itâs all been building up to today.
Finally, we can stop doubting our choice -- once we are committed, there will be no going back. We can stop debating this decision and move on with our life. Everyone in this house is ready for that -- to take a sure step forward.
And we will be getting coverage in the newspaper, our story a beacon of light for all those kids waiting for a family.
âItâs going to be great, Em,â Mark says, opening the top drawer of his dresser. Turning to me, he adds, âYouâve been incredible this entire journey, Emery. Your open heart is the reason Iâve made the initiatives for foster kids in the state. You inspire me, so much. And the kids are so lucky to have you as their mom.â He opens a black box, inside rests a ring with two diamonds. âOne for Betsy, one for Holden. They are your light, after all.â
âOh, Mark,â I say, overwhelmed at his gesture. âThis is so unexpected.â
He smiles. âThat means I did a good job.â He slips the band on my right ring finger and I pull him into a hug.
âThank you,â I say. âFor seeing me.â
âAlways.â
Outside we hear Betsy shouting for us. âMom, Dad, weâre gonna be late!â
I look at my watch, we have plenty of time, but I know Betsy has a lot riding on today. Sheâs so anxious to get this over with. She made a countdown out of construction paper rings.
âSweetie, weâre fine,â I tell her, walking into the foyer where she waits with Holden.
